Watch the beautiful seahorses and marvel at their grace in the water.
Some of the most interesting things about seahorses are their mating and reproductive behaviors. Once a pair is established they will stay together for their entire lives. The female will deposit her eggs in the male’s pouch and he then inseminates them and carries the babies to term. Every morning the pair will perform a ritual dance that is specific to that pair and will flash different colors that reinforces the bond between them. This color changing behavior is also used as a defense mechanism to blend in with their surroundings, much like a chameleon. These color changes, however, are not as drastic as when they are mating. A seahorse can change from black to bright orange in a matter of seconds. Seahorses can be found in areas with still water such as sea grass beds and mangrove areas where they feed on tiny little crustaceans such as baby shrimp.
The seahorses don’t chew their food. They use their “snout” to suck in the food like a vacuum cleaner. Because of this suction action they are able to eat food that is bigger than you would think would fit in their mouths. Because of their unusual shape, it used to be thought that they were actually a type of dragon.
